Bookmark and Share
Location Le Mars
Dates August 29, 2016 - September 04, 2016
Description: For 41 years Smithsonian Institution recording artist Bob Everhart has produced and directed an Agricultural Ag Expo that focus's attention on the music and entertainment of the first homesteaders and settlers in the state of Iowa. As President of the National Traditional Country Music Assn., he has kept a distinct and direct approach to presenting the music of our rural past in an honest and sincere effort. This event has become so popular it now requires seven days (Aug 29-Sept 4) and ten concert stages running from 9am to midnight every day to accommodate the well over 500 performers who come from around the world to participate in this old-time acoustic music event. Celebrities from all walks of life and music have attended to support this musical historical effort at 'saving' America's rural music, including pop artist Patti Page, and country artist Bill Anderson, and hundreds more. There are six old-time dances at one of the stages, everything from polka to Texas two-step. There are workshops for anyone interested in learning how to play an acoustic music instrument at another location. There are three specified stages devoted to 'jamming' or as Johnny Cash called it, a 'guitar pull.' There is a tipi village located in an old ghost town that hosts a very intimate quiet folk music stage. There is another stage hosted by musicians from West Virginia that is devoted to mountain music and music from the east. The main stage is air conditioned and seats 1,500, full much of the time. There is RV parking with electrical hook-ups for only $15 per night, no reservations required. The Dobrotorium is devoted to 'sliding' musical instruments. Another location is where the television show "Old Men Stories" shoots from morning to night. Great food, old-time country style to a 5-star restaurant & steak-house on the grounds, Archie's Waeside. Contests for amateurs and one-on-one songwriting sessions hosted by some of the top songwriters in America. 41 years has made this an event attended by international performers as well as audience. Rural Root Music Commission "CD of the Year" awards are made, and 'America's Old Time Music Hall of Fame' inductions are made annually. One of the stages is devoted to Gospel music of many different kinds. Another is devoted to the quiet music of autoharps and dulcimers. It's a family event, no drugs, no liquor.
